Following the Budget, the Labour UK Government announced changes to the Agricultural Property Relief. These changes to APR mean that small family farms will now have to pay a form of inheritance tax on assets worth more than £1 million.
This decision risks food security, jobs and risks the potential increase in food prices.
An average UK farm size of approximately 217 acres with the average land value of £8,200/acre even the modest family farms can exceed the £1 million threshold.
Harriet Cross MP joined farmers from across the UK on the 19th November 2024 to protest this decision outside Westminster.
Harriet said “Stop the Family Farm Tax. Labour must start listening to our farmers. This is the wrong tax, with the wrong targets at the wrong time. I’m standing with and for the thousands of farmers standing up to the Labour Government.”
Harriet met with local farmers that joined the protest from Gordon and Buchan in Westminster as well as NFU Scotland Vice President Andrew Connon who is also a constituent of Harriet’s.
